One of the most famous silent comedies by Buster Keaton - with beautiful accompaniment by renowned pianist Jane Gardner.

The story follows William “Bill” Canfield Jr., played by Keaton, a timid and somewhat awkward young man who arrives in a small Mississippi river town to reunite with his father, a tough steamboat captain. The father expects his son to be a strong, rugged sailor, but instead discovers a skinny college boy with refined manners and little interest in manual labor.

Like many of Keaton’s films, the plot is simple and mainly serves as a framework for elaborate visual gags. Keaton’s style relies heavily on physical performance, precise timing, and dangerous stunts performed without modern special effects. The film builds toward a spectacular climax involving a massive storm that tears through the town. During this sequence, Keaton performs the legendary stunt where the entire facade of a house collapses around him, leaving him unharmed as he stands perfectly aligned with an open window. This moment has become one of the most celebrated images in silent cinema.

Beyond its comedy, Steamboat Bill, Jr. also shows Keaton’s remarkable skill as a filmmaker. The storm sequence is technically impressive even by modern standards, combining large sets, mechanical effects, and carefully choreographed action. The film demonstrates how silent cinema could create excitement and humor through visual storytelling rather than dialogue. Today, the film is considered a classic of early American comedy and one of Keaton’s greatest works. Its influence can still be seen in modern physical comedy and stunt filmmaking. Even nearly a century after its release, the film remains entertaining thanks to Keaton’s creativity, courage, and timeless sense of humor.

The Music

Jane Gardner is a pianist and composer based in Edinburgh. She has received commissions from leading ensembles and organisations such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Piano Circus (6 pianos), The Gogmagogs (acrobatic string quartet) and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (brass quintet).

Her score preparation work includes orchestrating and editing the music of other composers, and she worked on Disney’s Brave soundtrack. For many years she has specialised in accompanying silent films, performing at major venues such as HippFest and the British Film Institute and contributing original music to the recent Cinema’s First Nasty Women DVD release. Jane enjoys playing both solo piano and with other musicians, and her scores are sometimes semi-composed and other times completely improvised.
